Next week, the fifth season of The Handmaid’s Tale premieres—a season that’s way, way beyond the Margaret Atwood book on which the series is based. And showrunner Bruce Miller isn’t done yet: Hulu has picked up the series for a sixth and final season.
And, lest you forget, Miller is also developing an adaptation of The Testaments, Atwood’s followup novel.
The Handmaid’s Tale premiered in 2017 and was well received, winning a whole handful of Emmys (including the first Emmy for a show on a streaming service) and a Golden Globe for Best Drama Series. Set in a dystopian future where women essentially have no rights, it follows handmaid June (Elisabeth Moss) as she fights to survive in a world of institutionalized rape and cruel subjugation.
“The writers, directors, and producers took the novel’s foundation and built on it, enhancing Atwood’s original ideas with subtext that feels so painfully acute that you would be forgiven for thinking that this was written in only the last five months,” Natalie Zutter wrote when the series premiered. Infuriatingly, The Handmaid’s Tale has remained hideously relevant.
The fifth season of The Handmaid’s Tale premieres September 14th on Hulu. Watch the most recent trailer here.
